April President’s Letter: Eventnado

April President’s Letter: Eventnado

April is always one of those weird times of year for me. The weather is getting warmer and more beautiful, but there’s the constant concern about the storm that’s just around the corner. If you’re from Dallas, you’re familiar with phrases like “straight line winds” “rotation” and “tornado watch,” and you know how much fear they can create in everyone. People are often afraid because there’s so much uncertainty, and so much about storms that they don’t understand- it’s the same thing with events.

We work every day with clients who are mystified by what we do, or at worst think that we “plan parties” and “have so much fun” every day. And, while it’s true that we enjoy ourselves, and have likely planned more than our fair share of parties, we also know that we have one of the most difficult jobs in the world. In fact, a recent report listed Event Coordinating as the fifth most stressful job overall. Boy, are they right! Even though this is a stressful job, most of us couldn’t imagine doing anything else. We know the ins and outs of this industry and it makes us the perfect ones to help alleviate any of the stress our clients may feel. When we’re faced with a challenging event, it’s important to remember that our clients simply may not get it, and it’s up to us to make their dreams (spoken or unspoken) come true. They look at the mountain of contracts, invoices, and BEOs with more than a little bit of fear and many times don’t know how we’re going to make it all happen. They hear words like “disaster plan,” and automatically start to think the worst things imaginable, not realizing that every event has one. They don’t know what we know…so they freak out. It’s up to us, the experts, to help calm down those fears and direct our clients to a safe place, a shelter if you will. We help them wait out the storm of the planning process until they walk into a finished room, and are blown away by all that we did to make their event the one they were dreaming (ok, maybe having nightmares) about. Basically, we’re their Pete Delkus.

Let’s go ride this crazy storm together!
