January President’s Letter- Present. Prepared. Patient.

By: Leigh Tidwell

I have a love/hate relationship with January. The holidays are over and the weather is starting to turn cold and nasty in North Texas. I love new beginnings, football playoffs, and the start of school again for my little ones! As I dropped them off for the first day after winter break, I really started thinking about New Year’s resolutions as more than just something to talk about the first week back in the office while I’m trying to get enough coffee in my system to think straight. This year’s D/FW NACE Awards meeting helped me solidify what I couldn’t put into words. BE PRESENT, BE PREPARED and BE PATIENT. Those are my resolutions for 2016.
As I left our first board meeting of 2016, I was grateful to BE PRESENT. Present with a dynamic group of event professionals that came together in our community to celebrate one another’s achievements and dedication. It takes a village to put on our monthly chapter meetings and I’m excited to see the collaboration as the 2015 board melds into the 2016 board. There is always something new at the monthly meetings and the Awards Meeting is the time to celebrate our members that so generously share their time, products and services to make our meetings something to look forward to. Thank you to each and every person and company that steps up to the plate all year long.
BE PREPARED – we all know it’s not an event until something goes wrong. That’s why we’re all great problem solvers! Being prepared– it’s an ideal we all share. While everyone was flowing in, people were solving hiccups behind the scenes. Being prepared can mean so many things! Are we prepared to welcome new guests as old friends? Prepared to sign up for a committee to become involved? Are we prepared to utilize our membership to it’s fullest? I hope so. That’s my challenge to each and every one that thinks maybe they don’t get anything out of their membership! You don’t know until you actually come to meeting, jump in, and see what it’s all about.
BE PATIENT. This is going to be hard one for me. I’m always looking into the future and around the corner to see what next great thing is heading my way. I realize I may be missing a lot by not just enjoying what’s swirling around me in the moment. As I looked around the room at people networking, dining, and enjoying the scene – I realized I was right back at resolution number 1 – BE PRESENT. I encourage you all to be present as we move into what will be an exciting year in our Chapter. I can’t wait to see each and every one of you at our next meeting in February. Until then, stay warm!
